We’re Afro Hairdresser of the Year!
30 November 2023We are delighted to announce that Melissa and Sara were crowned Afro Hairdresser of the Year at HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards 2023 on Monday 27 November. The event was sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional.
Commenting on this prestigious accolade, Melissa said,
“Wow what an honour it is for us to have won Afro Hairdresser of the Year! We were delighted just to be considered finalists alongside so many people whose work we admire!”
The Melissa Timperley Salon has been open for 7 years now, and we’re immensely proud to be an inclusive salon. Inclusivity to us means we are a gender-neutral salon, we are wheelchair accessible, we offer our top floor for privacy for hijabs, and we provide silent appointments for anyone struggling with mental health. It also means we cater for and LOVE all textures of hair.
A passion for Afro hair
Our team has always enjoyed working with curly hair and welcoming clients to the salon who often tell us they’ve had trouble in the past finding the right specialist hairdresser. Across the hairdressing profession, we believe a lot more can be done to cater for curly and coiled hair.
Over the years, it’s prompted us to work hard on inclusivity and educating our team on the nuances of Afro hair, so they master the skills needed to make Afro hair the very best it can be.
Just recently we had the wonderful The Hair Sanctuary visit to further inspire and hone our skills. When you don’t have textured hair yourself you have to work harder to really understand the best products, the best techniques and the best care.
Encouraging other salons
This was why it was important for us to enter this Hairdressing Journal Award category. We wanted to show the importance of learning and mastering all there is about Afro hair in order to offer even more inclusive services in our salon.
Melissa adds, “I wanted to inspire other salon owners and hairdressers to educate themselves about Afro hair, expand their skills and their knowledge. Hair is hair after all. This is a wonderful recognition of our learning journey. We are immensely grateful to the judges, but also want to thank all our lovely afro-haired clients who support and trust us each day.”
